English art deco sterling silver centerpiece by Harold Stabler London 1940
Harold Stabler hallmarlked silver centerpiece London 1940 for Goldsmiths and Silversmiths

Rare 1940s English Art Deco Silver Centerpiece

London 1940

An important English silver bowl and matching plateau by Harold Stabler London 1940 for the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co. The bowl weighs 79 troy ounces without the plateau. The base is lined with wood and has a black glass disc held in place with four wood pins. Monogrammed on one side of the bowl. Matching hallmarks on both pieces. Decorated rings hanging from two arms on the rim of the bowl.

Harold Stabler was an important designer in Britain. He designed some of the bronze plaques for the London underground. The applied decoration and the pierced ornate base have elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco combined. I would imagine in 1940 not much of this quality was being produced in wartime Britain.

Plateau 14" diameter. 1 1/2" tall.

Bowl 10" diameter. 5 1/2" tall.
